Environmental Programs:

The following are independent off-campus study programs with an environmental focus.

  • NU Renewable Energy Policy and Development is a five-week experience in Bonn, Germany in which students learn about German energy policy and initiatives in renewable, sustainable sources of energy and energy conservation in European and global contexts.
  • Semester in Environmental Science at Woods Hole consists of 15-week fall semester at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, featuring a field and laboratory-based introduction to ecosystem science and the biogeochemistry of coastal forests, freshwater ponds and estuaries.
  • School for Field Studies offers semester and summer programs focused on environmental topics ranging from wildlife management to sustainable development to marine resource conservation.
  • SEA Semester programs are 12 weeks long, half on shore at Woods Hole and half at sea; they focus on a variety of subjects, including oceans & climate, energy & the ocean environment, and ocean exploration.
  • SIT Study Abroad A pioneer in experiential, field-based study abroad, offers semester and summer programs in more than 40 countries in Asia and the Pacific, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, focused on critical global issues with opportunities for undergraduate research.
  • Engineers for a Sustainable World is a nonprofit student organization that is a part of a network of students and professionals committed to progress through innovative engineering design. Students work to design environmentally sustainable solutions to problems in local communities around the world.
  • Organization for Tropical Studies: Costa Rica Semester is a field-based program in which the tropical forests of Costa Rica serve as the classroom.  The program provides students with an understanding of scientific ecology, complemented by a strong foundation in resource management
